Peter Herbert is a barrister specialising in human rights, employment discrimination and child care law.
He is the Chair of the Society of Black Lawyers since 1984. Peter is a part-time Recorder (judge) of the Crown court, a part-time Special immigration Judge since 1996 and an Employment Tribunal chair.
Peter is the Deputy Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority with responsibility for the policing agenda for London, stop and search issues and deaths in custody. He chairs the pan-London independent Race Hate Crimes Forum, helping to combat racial violence in London. He has chaired several mental health homicide enquiries and is currently a member of the Attorney General's Race Advisory Committee.
In 1995, Peter was a recipient of the National Bar Association's Human Rights Award in the US and he was awarded the American Bar Association diversity award in Philadelphia in 2002.
